The 19th Annual CIGRE Canada Conference on Power Systems is going to be electric.
Held in Winnipeg from October 28 - 31 at the LEED Silver Certified RBC Convention Centre Winnipeg, and charged by renewable energy from Manitoba Hydro, CIGRE 2024 will bring together leaders in business, engineers, operators, manufacturers, policy makers and academics to collaborate and address today’s energy challenges –– and of course, network.
To bring the conference here, Manitoba Hydro’s Director, Engineering Division, Angela Driver worked with Tourism Winnipeg. In the Q&A below, Driver details how locals too can become a Winnipeg ambassador, and why Winnipeg is such a great conduit for events.
How did you first start working with Tourism Winnipeg?
I started working with Tourism Winnipeg after attending a Tourism Winnipeg Local Ambassador familiarization trip. This trip was recommended by a colleague at the university who is also involved with CIGRE Canada and supported the idea of proposing Winnipeg as a potential location for the 2024 conference.
Why is Winnipeg such a great fit for CIGRE 2024?
Winnipeg, located in the heart of Canada, is easily accessible from anywhere in the country and beyond. The conference, related to the Power System industry, benefits from the presence of Manitoba Hydro, headquartered in Winnipeg. Manitoba Hydro is a leader in renewable electricity, with approximately 97% of our electricity coming from hydroelectric sources, making it an attractive sponsor for the conference.
What venues will you be using during CIGRE 2024, and why are you using those venues?
The RBC Convention Centre is our Main venue for the conference proceedings. Delta Hotels by Marriott Winnipeg is the primary accommodation for attendees, and Hargrave Street Market is hosting one of the evening events.
Considering your position at Manitoba Hydro, sustainability is obviously a big component of what you do. How green is CIGRE 2024?
Efforts have been made to reduce transportation needs for individuals staying in Winnipeg. For example, Delta Hotels by Marriott Winnipeg and Manitoba Hydro head office are within two blocks walking distance from the RBC Convention Centre. Additionally, the entire event is powered by affordable, reliable energy from Manitoba Hydro.
What are you excited to show off about Winnipeg to conference delegates?
I am excited to showcase the amazing conference facilities at the RBC Convention Centre, the vibrant downtown, and landmarks like the Legislative Building, Manitoba Hydro Place, and the Canadian Museum for Human Rights. Delegates can also tour Manitoba Hydro’s Riel Converter Station and the High Voltage Test Facility.
Where are your attendees coming from?
Attendees are primarily from within Canada, with some coming from across North America and a few from Europe.
Do you have any advice for future Winnipeg business event ambassadors?
Engage with Tourism Winnipeg early. They offer valuable advice and can assist in identifying important considerations if you are involved in a formal bidding process.
